Los comicios al Parlamento de Kuwait celebrados el pasado sábado se han saldado con un resultado imprevisible: 17 de los 50 escaños que componen la Cámara legislativa han ido a parar a manos de candidatos chiíes, cuya comunidad supone cerca del 25 % de la población del país. Este éxito contrasta con los resultados que obtuvieron en las elecciones legislativas del pasado febrero, cuando solo consiguieron siete escaños, y se explica por la baja participación registrada en una convocatoria marcada por el boicot de la oposición, que la considera «ilegítima» e «inconstitucional».

The Constitutional Court of Kuwait on Wednesday held that this year's election for the new parliament [official website, in Arabic] was unconstitutional and the previous parliament of 2009 should be reinstated, state agency Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) [official website] reported. The court's decision to nullify [KUNA report] the current parliament came only two days after Kuwait's ruler Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah[BBC profile; JURIST news archive] suspended [NYT report] the parliament for a month in response to escalating tensions between the more liberal, western-backed lawmakers and the Islamist-led lawmakers.
Kuwait man sentenced to 10 years for posting insulting comments on Twitter

A Kuwait court on Monday sentenced a man to ten years of imprisonment for posting insulting and defaming comments about the Prophet Muhammad [BBC backgrounder] and the Sunni Muslim [BBC backgrounder] rulers of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain on Twitter [media website]. Judge Hisham Abdullah found 26-year-old Hamad al-Naqi, a Shia Muslim [BBC backgrounder], guilty on all charges of endangering state security and ordered the maximum sentence.
